Photo Project: Series 1

The photographer I chose to emulate was Manuel Álvarez Bravo. Bravo worked within the genre of street photography. Most of Bravo's subjects were shop windows, everyday streets and interactions. Manuel Álvarez Bravo's photography was meant to capture 'Mexican identity'. I attempted capture culture in San Francisco like Manuel did Mexico by shooting the similar subjects as he did. My subjects for this series consisted of some sort of religious advertisement, graffiti/tagging on buildings and a scene of two people crossing the street.

Portraits

In class we watched a documentary on Richard Avedon. By watching the documentary we learned a lot about his style of photography. For this photo shoot we used a white background and black and white filter. We attempted to capture Richard Avedon's style of photography by capturing the emotion in our model's eyes.

Micro Worlds 2

For the second shoot of mirco worlds I tried to use more books and computer screens as backgrounds more. For the first picture I used a book as the background. For the second, third and fourthI used different backgrounds on the computer screen. Using a book and the computer screen was difficult due to the glare. For the first three photos I kind of tried to tell a story through it.

Micro Worlds

In order for this shoot to be successful all the photos had to be taken at a low angle. Some difficulties faced during this shoot was trying to avoid a glare when taking a picture with the background as a book or computer screen.

For this assignment our goal was to show balance between the subject and the background through the rule of thirds.

Depth Staging

The purpose of this photo shoot was to capture depth. This was done by focusing on one object up close and disregarding the background surrounding the object.
